There are clearly some people who post multiple good/bad ratings. I will post once with my honest opinoin. I started training with CN in January 2012. I will reply to some accusations as the problem/issue occured to me"never ever get weekends off or holidays"Reply: Total BS. I have had at least 6 weekends off and 2 holidays for which i was paid for. I had a recent death in the family, i was immidiatley given time off, no questions asked."You will get written up if you take 3 days off in a year"Reply: Total BS. You are given 12 PLD's(personal leave day) Each year to use as you please. You are also given 2 weeks vacation time/pay(to start) You also can earn EO's(up to 2 days off at a time if you take 24 hrs rest) You earn an EO every 1075 miles, which can generally be made in a week and a half."They hire you to fire you"Reply: Semi true, and im being nice to the naysayers here. They do a large amount of efficiency testing. Sometimes it is goofy, but safety is a priority and this company preaches it."They yell at you everyday"Reply: Total BS, i was yelled at once during my time here so far. And it was because i put myself in danger... I didnt slow anyone down, i didnt put anyone else in danger. I only put myself in danger and got yelled at for it. To me, thats showing you that they care for your safety. They pay you to invest in stocks, its just like getting free money. The stocks generally go up which makes it even sweeter. Also for the haters.... No one is forcing you to stay. It must be somewhat good if you're still around... People will always find something they hate about this job. But myself, i would(and have) recommend it to any of my friends.
I wonder what department you work for. If you so honest. Cause at mechanical dept in Mac yard they treat you like crap. They got cameras in the lunch room. The bosses will yell at you if they think that your taking to long. And they just wrote up a few guys for tacking more than Three days of a year. Gave them some line that it's above industry standerds. The only reason to stay at CN is for the pay. I work hard a do a good job. So please don't go on about just that I'm Lazy because I'm a Union guy. There is only maybe three bosses that are decent. The rest are probably the worst people I've worked with. It used to be better even 3 years ago when I started. But now I'm looking for an out. I was promised an aprentiship, but now I just run and bag hoses as far as weekends of ya RIGHT!! You get a few when you start training then that's it.... I wish I could mention names on this page.. But I'll leave it at Mac yard is a sh!t hole. I don't care how they dress it up for the CEO.
I work at Walker Yard and have to agree with my counter part at Mac Yard.I was hired as an apprentise and have yet to be sent to school. I have gone through a few classes for locomotives but nothing pertaining to the red sealed trade i am supposed to receive. I have been yelled at only by one certain foreman a few times but will be jumping down his throat next time it happends. He is stressed and when i went to him for information he yelled and swore at me. (which is a violation to CNs code of conduct) I have never had a stat holiday off and have had the worst shifts for my family life.(i know i can quit but you can stuff your opinion you know where if you feel you have the right to tell me to quit ) They want us to sign the cab card on locomotives we have never touched and if they fail on the consist they will be coming for our heads. Get what you can from this corporation and move on..The recession is OVER so theres tons of jobs out there that will treat you better.
I work as a conductor in Saskatchewan. It seems like location is a big factor here. I can imagine a high traffic city terminal like Mac yard or even Walker being stressful. Also, as a conductor you do have it pretty good. To be fair i cannot post an educated opinoin on what being a diesel doc is like. So i will take your work for it. There should be a conductor position, and a diesel doc/carmen position to rate on this site. And hey, just throwing it out there guys... They are still hiring a boatload of conductors.
So basically you are saying that CN is a good place because they give you one day off to attend a family funeral?? Wow! Six weekends off in your first year, great...no thanks, I want a life! The comment with reply format used in the post is obviously the same management person or agency used to counter the employee reviews and improve the company ratings. There are better jobs that pay more and a good better quality of life without working with a culture of fear.
You clearly don't work in mechanical department, first of all 6 weekends out of 52 that's terrible for such a huge company there has toBe a better system then this 5 days a week Tuesday wensdays off. Personal sick day absolutely do not exist for the common trades worker dont know where your gettig that from however it is true a death in the family you will get 3 days off but I think that may be a law in Canada , can't say for sure though . 2 weeks holidays minimum is also untrue you have to work one full year to get that and like me if you start in say June of one year for the next full year starting in January you will only get 6 days . Terrible company for home life plain and simpleEverything else I cannot complain about really we have good managers now where I am so intimidation is fairly low forNow , but that doesn't make up for working every Christmas and new years for the last 5 years. Looking for new employee meant as we speak.had enough.
any job that doesnt give you the odd xmas break or intimidates you is not good especially when it is just trades pay. saying that investing in stocks is free money is very misleading to any potential recruit as well as insulting their intelligence. this looks like a management post for sure.
"The recession is OVER so theres tons of jobs out there that will treat you better."What planet are you living on? I've been unemployed now for 6 months. Sending out resumes every week and haven't even had an interview yet. Employed people always think there is something better out there...well there isn't! If you have a job, you better learn to like it because trying to find a job right now is the worst position anyone can be in.
You love it because you are still training... you wait, you will come to resent the company (not the job). Wait until your first statement, when you've had to work every Christmas of your young childrens lives or be repremanded, have management throw you under the bus because THEY are too afraid to get fired so they blame you for their mistakes, have management smile at you, be your buddy and write everything you say down in your personnel file to use against you or your fellow employees in the future. I can go on and on but what it comes down to is that eventually you will be one of the naysayers towards the company, no matter how much you love the job, money and benefits.
