• I currently work at excelHR and have noticed these sites typically offer the negative reviews only. I wanted to add a more experienced point of view based on someone who has grown with this company over the past few years. The first year was hard, it's a lot to learn for someone who has never worked in the staffing industry, and it is a really fast paced position with deadlines and stressful situations. This can prove to be too big of a challenge for people and often they do leave within the first year, we also only keep the best. We have a strong reputation in our industry of being the top staffing firm, so if your work is monitored it's because your interactions with excelhr's clients need to uphold our professional standards. Most positions are sales based, so naturally, there will be goals and targets associated with the responsibilities. The compensation in the first year is more than fair, and as your numbers grow, so does your salary. ExcelHR has proven time and time again that every employee is valuable to them. The team atmosphere is truly like a family, and there are many of our candidates and clients who have come to feel the same way. We have a fabulous location, upscale offices, company events that reward you for hard work, and an excellent management team who have an open door policy. In terms of candidates, we do a thorough screening process for all of our positions and we look at much more than just a resume. Keep in mind that the way you present yourself and interact with our company has a large impact on which roles we refer you to. We are a group of optimistic, enthusiastic, and motivated people who represent top employers in Ottawa. We have countless success stories of placing people in their first government contract which lead to their long term career, or finding an excellent candidate a job within hours of meeting them, or having a one week position turn into a permanent role with a candidates' dream company. I wish there were more reviews online from those people, as it would truly demonstrate how many happily employed internal and referrals of excelhr there are. • This place is hell for a newly grad or an intern. They will make you work overtime at the very least about a few hours each day, (you are expected to work as 'normal' hours way above the regular hours. Statistically higher chance of getting fired, very huge turnover. Very fake culture. Shit, pardon my french, compensation. I believe Walmart is better.   read complete rating Hide complete rating

• I've been with excelHR for almost five years and it's a great place to work! The team is supportive, encouraging and motivating, which makes coming to work each day a positive experience. While some may criticize the long work hours, I think the days fly by because I'm passionate about what I do. The reason for that is the supportive management team. This is a company that cares about its employees and encourages you to achieve both personal and professional success. • I'm a former employee of excel and even though I left, my experience there was fantastic! The training especially prepared me for my next recruiting role. Our small team worked closely together and helped each other out. There were a few late nights - but all with the reward of a solid job placement at the end of it. • I do not recommend joining this company. It seems great for the first little while, they give you incentives and they advocate team work.
  
  The management there is micro-managing, if you are the type of person who doesn't have your own opinions, work ethic or pride, then this place is for you as they will mold you to be what they want you to be.
  
  Essentially, you will give up your entire life - even if you make it to the point where you stay there for 10+ years, you would have missed out on a personal and family life. They use guilt trips to make you feel as though you are lacking in comparison to the others on the team. Do not be fooled, this place is quite clicky, despite their "we don't believe in cliques" training.
  
  They will train you well, I'll give them that. Their resources are great and so is their time management model.
  
  However, the compensation for what is expected of you is ridiculous. They say over time hours are suggested but not enforced, and that is not true. It is not worth the experience.
  
  Bottom line, the decision to work here is much more than thinking if you have what it takes to work hard. I'm sure you do. Just think about your personal cost. At the end of the day, the quality of life at this job is poor - you couldn't pay me enough to stay.   read complete rating Hide complete rating

• I've worked at excelHR for a few years, and I was surprised to see the negative comments on this site! The work is hard, there is stress, there is pressure, and overtime is normal. But this is more a result of the highly competitive industry, not a result of management or a "toxic environment".
  
  The challenges early on are not for everyone, but if you're up to a challenge this is a great place to work - there is a reason so many of the staff have been there for 10 years or more.
  
  No one was complaining about management or a toxic environment until 2008 when the economy tanked and new government procurement rules changed the staffing industry in Ottawa. Many of our competitors went out of business - it has been a challenge for our industry not just excelHR.
  
  I'm proud to work here, I love my colleagues, my earnings have gone up every year, and Managers and owners have been great to me and my family.

• I would not recommend this employer. Although they hire well and attract talented individuals they do not treat their employees well. They market themselves as an HR organization but do not demonstrate that they value their employees or respect them. It is a stressful and unhealthy environment. • I had a great experience because I was able to learn about client services, HR trends, interviewing and selection, and team work. It's not perfect because finding the right candidate is a lot of work. I worked a normal work week in my view, about 40 to 42 hours a week and I felt I earned a good income that grew quite a bit most years. I got a lot of feedback to improve but I found it helpful. We had a lot of fun parties and events that were special. I went into HR after a few years and I feel my time there gave me a foundation to grow from. • ExcelHR has obviously gotten wind of the dismal (and honest) reviews on this site, which is why there are several similarly-worded reviews posted at around the same time. The truth about this company is that it treats its employees terribly. Far from what they claim when trying to sign you, they do not "invest" in you as an employee. You are paid nothing (barely a living wage and no overtime. And there WILL be overtime. Lots of overtime.) and required to stay late nearly every night, disregarding the fact that you have a life beyond Excel. As a probationary employee (you will start at the company in this manner), you are afforded close to zero rights and protections. It should be pointed out that most Ontario corporations use a standard two to three month probation period for their employees. ExcelHR's probation period is SIX MONTHS. You can be fired for any reason, or for no reason. And they have a statistically high chance of firing rather than keeping you as an employee. Turnover at this company is extraordinarily high and it is the company's doing, not employees "being unable to do the job," as they will tell you. One last note about their corporate culture... It is degrading and fake. If you do not consistently profess your love for this company (the same company that is working you 12 hours a day and paying you nothing), then you are admonished for "not having the right attitude" or some such thing. It isn't enough to do your work and do it well, you are then expected to appreciate the "fun" forced on you by way of their frequent and mandatory company events.
  
  Here is the thing. If you are just out of university and desperately need a job, I would consider this place as something to put on your resume. You will learn to love any job that you have thereafter as well and be grateful. ExcelHR does teach you things (though management does not) and you will work with some intelligent and creative young professionals so put in your time and gain some experience before they fire you or you can't take the place anymore.
  
  If, however, you are exploring other options and don't need a job right this minute, I would go elsewhere. Anywhere else, in fact. There are so many companies that will treat you like a human being and actually invest in you as an employee. They pay better too.   read complete rating Hide complete rating

• I worked for excelHR for 3 years and it was my first position in an office after graduating university. They provide ample training and coaching on recruitment strategies and sales tactics to guide a new hire how to manage their desk of existing clients and new candidates. I was also encouraged to prospect for new business and did receive some fillable orders through the process. My first 2 years were amazing with high success in placements, client/candidate activity and numerous social events to reward us for our hard work and long hours. The staffing industry does require a consultant to put in some extra time per week in order to fill that order before the competition. It also comes down to time management as well and takes a full year to become well emersed in the role with lots of multi-tasking. In my third year I decided to pursue other opportunities in HR and management was VERY supportive in my case. I explained that I studied HR and would like to move away from sales but still work to transition my desk until end of fiscal.
  It is a wonderful company to work with and they hire fantastic employees, many that i see regularily after resigning a couple years ago. I recommend anyone to be a consultant if they have a passion for teamwork, client/candidate service, high energy for selling candidate's expertise and those who can multitask to the extreme. Even though there is a high component of recruiting, those wishing to pursue HR it is not the place for you. Personality and drive to succeed are main qualities as a consultant and the rest of the training and skills you will learn along the way. Some are there for years and others learn rewarding skills to send them on their way.
  excelHR is a leader in the industry for many reasons and they proved it to me as an employee, then a client when I hired a few temporary resources and now as a candidate working for one of their clients. excelHR is truely a full service firm in this regard and my main advice to anyone who first starts as a consultant is manage your time, be organized and have quality in your calls and placements to ensure success in the year. • I was a Recruitment Specialist at excelHR and learned a lot from the start. The management team was very good at giving balanced feedback about my work, praising me for my accomplishments and giving me ideas of how I could improve. Like other careers it is not for everyone; it is a great environment for those who like to improve and learn on a constant basis, for those who are competitive and who like working in a busy environment. The company was also great at recognizing their employees for their efforts and rewarding us with lots of fun activities. Additionally, the people I worked with were great. They were very helpful and very encouraging, and welcomed me as a member of the family from the start. I truly enjoyed the time I spent at excelHR (close to a year) and would recommend it to anyone who has the kind of personality that would enjoy a fast paced workplace with great challenges. • ExcelHR is the type of company that invests in its employees and helps them succeed. The company provides a structured training program which gives you the foundation you need to develop business relationships with both clients and candidates. You are consistently given feedback on your performance and direction on how to achieve higher results. It is a team based atmosphere that makes you feel supported on a daily basis. I genuinely enjoyed going to work because I looked forward to seeing my colleagues. People who want to work hard and be the best thrive in this environment. • I did not work as an employee but rather under contract. During the course of nearly five months I worked two assignments and let me say that one of them was dreadful! It sounded really good from speaking with the recruiter but after arriving on assignment and being told of how many people had left after their first shift I quickly started to wonder. I lasted nearly two months! not one day like most of the others! It was a part time position for me to supplement my primary job with excel and soon found that I could not and would not continue with this horrific position in a terrible office space! The other contract was not great either and even though it was in Quebec where minimum wage is only 9.50 I would have thought that the agency would have had the decency to match the wage with Ontarios 10.25 which is not too much to ask. The company is cheap and will pay you the bare minumum. The recruiters that I dealt with were not genuine but from reading previous comments I guess they hate where they work which would explain things. I hope that one day people will not have difficulties finding work in turn will put these greedy organizations out of business once and for all!!!!
