• I've joined the caf 16 years ago, in which I've done a tour to Afghanistan, and been tasked around Canada and the United States. I've been medically released from the forces and I received a lot of harassment and intimidation from my chain of command when I got my notice of release. I really found in my occupation, they really punish you when it's time to move on. • I’ve spent 7 year in the regular force as a tech. specialist It is an enormous employer with tons of opportunities. I was impressed by the amount of emphasis put on “classroom” lectures even during inittial basic training. If you care for others , are looking to grow personally and professionally this is for you. Most stereotypes are not all that just anymore as the CF has gone through gigantic cultural, technological and demographical transformation in the past 12 years. For instance, even though I belong to non-officer occupation during my training out of 20 students all but one had over 2yrs. of post secondary education and half had degrees. Benefits are unparallel to any private sector. It is designed , aimed and preached to serve the Canadian society as a Canadian society. Anything that is expected out of a public servants, it is rigorously mandated in the forces that I have experienced. Initially I did witness some cultural differences in ‘06 when I joined by those with 20-30 years in old timers….and most have gotten out or are leaving. For instance I know of a dozen openly gay soldiers and they are treated as anyone else. The initial “training” phase is tough especially if you have dependents. Make sure you inform yourself as much as possible. In 7 years I have had my ups and downs, frustrations and joys…..nonetheless, the adventure, education, experience the people from this organization have enriched my life. Knowing what I know now about the CF, I would not have waited until I was 25 to join. However, if you are expecting to be “blowing stuff up” everyday for living and doing what the recruiting video shows right away, you should not be in the military. Just like our society, you will have a wide range of people with generally similar purpose of wanting to serve and looking for self improvement. Some find their limit early on and many continue growing for the rest of their careers. For members like that even the education is fully paid for (completion of a university degree or grad schools). Don’t get me wrong, I an not disillusioned by my duty but I am realistic. You will not find a private corporation of this size that is not populated by bureaucracy and human resource malfunction. At least in the CF you will always have amazing social support, unique professional opportunities and most importantly you will be protected by the public servant policies. If you are mature and wise enough, you will easily manoeuvre through the training, paperwork and minuscule “standard operating procedures”.   read complete rating Hide complete rating

• I am currently a first year recruit so I am going to comment on my initial engagement with this organization. I came to the Canadian forces to be involved in a technical trade. My first impression that the recruiting center was helpful, professional and quite courteous. What I realized is that yes all those characteristics was quite so however they seem to lack the organization and timeliness they would expect from their recruits. When I accepted the job offer, I was prompted for paperwork and a congratulations ceremony which I really enjoyed. I left for basic in the winter and it was cold. Basic was quite rough being that it was quite physically and mentally challenging. They are rough on you because they want to stress you, they are tough but fair and most of the time when you had issues, they would help you resolve those problems. Basic was cool but I'm glad I'm done with that. Afterwards I was enrolled into the schooling portion for a tech. Most of the issues I had were that the administration was a nightmare to deal with not belonging to a unit. Even up to today I struggle to get my paperwork done. In order to excel in the CF, I think it really comes to down to being strong mentally, listening to your mentors and pushing forward. It is a good environment to work in if you enjoy your field. Then again, I don't have much experience but I am still looking forward to the next experiences. All in all, the best piece of advice I can give to you if you are interested in this place is that make sure you plan accordingly financially with plan a and b and expect to be disappointed with the loads of paperwork. However, open your mind to the experiences and training they will give you. It is like no other job but the best thing I find is that no other employers will give you a chance to prove yourself and establish a good career like that of one in the Canadian forces. • Nobody likes war. However, I am proud of my time in the forces. The Canadian Forces is truly a gem, where you'll meet some of the cream of the crop of our country. As I said before, war is hell, no one joins the CF because they like war but most join because they love this country. I am proud of what I accomplished in Afghanistan. • Not a bad job at all, there is nothing wrong in fighting for your country. You learn words like "HONESTY" "INTEGRITY" & "PROFESSIONALISM". • I was a member for 20 years, retired and miss it! I got a descent pension, went through tough times with cutbacks in the 90s but left on a medical release. For all the young people that are thinking of signing up, it's a great career! I now work for one of the worst companies (Shaw) in the country and believe me I wouldn't give them the rating that I give the CF   read complete rating Hide complete rating

Where else can you get a decent pension and excellent training these days, with employers showing no loyalty whatsoever, slashing benefits, laying people off.
