Worked in downtown Toronto location as a cashier, here it goes.

1. Union dues are deducted (more hours, more deductions). Not worth it for a minimum wage job.

2. Favouritism and cliques to the max: sucking up will allow you to move up from cashier to customer service, thus creating competition between individuals and between groups of resentful/brown nosing employees.

3. Feedback and performance standards: some newer stores (one I worked at) evaluate how fast you are and how friendly you are. One customer complaint and you are done for (unless you are a brown noser). Management is biased against you, and unless you are a brown noser you will never be recognized for your hard work.

4. Hours: You want a lot of hours? You wont get it. Too many people work at the store, competing for hours. Do you know how many middle aged new hire cashiers need hours?

One customer complaint and you are done for (unless you are a brown noser). Management is biased against you, and unless you are a brown noser you will never be recognized for your hard work even though you are evaluated harshly.

4. Hours: You want a lot of hours? You wont get it. Too many people work at the store, competing for hours. Good for students though.

Conclusion: Cashier jobs are good for students relative to work experience and wage expectations (none). They are always promoted to customer service (same pay you guys) because they are eager to please (although it depends on their perception of you) and the middle aged workers or foreigners are shunned. THEY MAKE YOU PAY UNION DUES: this is the biggest reason why you should not work here if you are NOT a student. Union dues does NOTHING for you as a cashier and only makes it harder to get a raise (rules say you have to work a billion hours first). They push you around for little pay because there are plenty of other people waiting for a job. In all my job experience, Ive never been evaluated and expected to perform so well for such a menial cashier job. HOPEFULLY the store you work at is less stringent. Doubt it.

It's like that in Ottawa as well. Brown nosing leads to favoritism and people with less seniority getting more hrs. How is this possible.

Dept managers (...) running the show leads for plummeting sales and added stress on part time workers attempting to keep the place together.

Hopefully Target will put an end to this company!

Even in Ottawa? Horrible! I think what really buys me the most is that we have to pay a UNION that does NOTHING for us. So cons about this job are exaggerated because we are paying the union for our hard work.
