I was an employee in the Toronto division from 1988 to 2011. I left to pursue other interests, but really, the job had become a major stress point in my life. During the first few years of employment the company supported a bakery apprenticeship program in which I participated in and benefited from. I basically went from being semi-skilled to fully qualified and I remain grateful for the opportunity that Loblaws afforded me. However those first few years gave way to a company policy of moving from fresh made from scratch baked goods to outsourcing cheaper frozen product and us bakers became little more than clerks, opening endless boxes of frozen garbage to be sold as fresh product. Loblaws was always extremely paternalistic and top down in regards to its employee relations, but I guess you didn't mind it so much when you could see that at least they cared. All that has changed and fallen by the wayside. There are almost no more old timers either in the store or in management. In the end, for me, I felt that I had better get a move on, or that they would find a way of terminating my employment. Too bad, so sad!
I too am a long term employee with this company and also feel time is running out. Hopefully I can make it for a few more years when my company pension kicks in and I can leave and pursue something more enjoyable. I'm getting dizzier every day from shaking my head due to some of the crazy, stupid decisions this company is making.
