I hate how people insult the executives of the company. There is nothing wrong with them, they are smart and humble people. Many people suggested that RIM switches to Android/Windows mobile, etc. What RIM is trying to do now is to continue being an inventor. RIM is a company that has had to evolve in response to the success of its products in the marketplace. From its small startup company roots, it is now trying to be successful as a large, global company, and many aspects of the corporate culture and they way things are done at RIM, have had to change quickly to keep up.

Many reviews on this site point to what really is a management culture at RIM. People do not matter - job must be done at all costs and not a single manager is evaluated on "how" they do it, how big their turnover is, or how happy their people are. HR/OD is not there to be people oriented because people do not matter - it is all about the product. It is a "chew them up and spit them out approach"...

You will make more working in toronto. You will also have a higher cost of living. All said, you are paid decently considering the cost of living in the city.

If you are young, and like to party, Waterloo is a nice party place, get far enough away from the universities and its a nice city to raise a family.

All and all, great place to work, great people to work with.

I joined RIM because I because of the wow factor of the BlackBerry and cutting-edge technology. Unfortunately I realised soon enough that I had no chance to advance because I wasn't one of the geeks and didn't belong to the "RIM Boys Club". Total compensation is well below other companies - no stock options, no stock purchase plan, lower quality health plan, no real retirement benefits. It hurts...

I have worked here for over 2 years and am looking to leave. The company lacks skilled management and tries to make managers of people who have technical expertise but no people skills - no amount of training can change this.

Training is another bone of contention, thousands of dollars are given to some people while others are lucky to recieve $100.00 per month. The pay is below average.

RIM is...

One of the best companies to work for in Canada. I did my coop job there for 4 terms, and at the end they gave me a full time job offer, now i'm in 4th year, cant wait to finish off University and go back to RIM. No wonder how it's in the top-ten list of employers in Canada. RIM Rocks.....

I think how you feel about RIM really depends on the department you're in. I get a paid 1 hour lunch, which I usually take at a nearby bar with my coworkers (who happened to turn into good friends). Last Friday morning, the company took us to the premier of I Am Legend, then gave us the rest of the day off. Oh, and we went to see Hip & Van Halen last month, for free.

RIM is an not a bad place to work -- you get to work with cutting edge technology and there are lots of opportunities to apply for internal postings if you get tired of your job.

Compensation is not up to par with other high-tech companies, but it's a good place to gain experience as a new grad.

Although I haven't worked at RIM long. I do believe I have the jist of it. The continental shifts are questionable with the attempted balance of payable stats. Some crews end up owing in excess of a full week of pay back at the end of the year where other crews get extra time off. The training system lacks in a way that could turn off even the most qualified worker. I agree with on of the...

RIM is growing very quickly. Compensation in some departments does not match industry standard. Management is being hired externally and is changing the RIM culture for the worse instead of promoting internally.

RIM is great for people coming out of school but it has grown fast Many managers are young, have never worked anywhere except RIM and do not have the life experience required for such demanding roles in such a large, progressive company.

RIM also needs to compensate better. Currently, employees are expected to put in a minimum of 40 hours and are not paid for lunch. This means if you take...

-Bleeding edge

-Free BlackBerry

-Travel opportunities

Cons:

-Crappy salary (you can/will make more in Toronto)

-Waterloo/Kitchener sucks.

-Ridiculous amount of work sometimes

RIM is certainly trying (and for the most party succeeding) to be the best at everything they do, from building devices for ever walk of life to supporting and maintaining those devices, they recognize that this can only be done through their employees. RIM seems to have that at mind with every new change and advancement that they make for their employees, constantly asking what they can do to...

Multifaceted. MFG / call centre - you'll probably learn some cool things, but churn is high for the hourly workers (salaried employees have different view). Engineering (HW and SW) is a meat grinder - high stress, rapid pace of development, above-average pay and certain perks. You have to be absolutely in love with the fact that you are making an iconic product and that anyone you tell you...
