If you graduated at the bottom of your high school class from a small town with no other hope/skills in life then this is the place for you.

They like them young and dumb; So you won't ask questions and follow orders. My dog follows orders.

Being in the forces for over 15 years I have seen it all. From a good bunch of guys to the old boy mentality. Still I have seen where everyone would all ganged up on one person for absolutely no reason other then there bosses didn't like him. (...).

All in all the job can be rewarding, if you have good supervisors that follow the rules in the forces, but the ratio is about 40% good, 20% don't...

Nobody likes war. However, I am proud of my time in the forces. The Canadian Forces is truly a gem, where you'll meet some of the cream of the crop of our country. As I said before, war is hell, no one joins the CF because they like war but most join because they love this country. I am proud of what I accomplished in Afghanistan. Not a bad job at all, there is nothing wrong in fighting for your country. You learn words like "HONESTY" "INTEGRITY" & "PROFESSIONALISM". You get to learn what they really mean to you as a person, as a former soldier i was proud to have served with the forces and i thank them for what they gave me.

Teaches you so many intangible traits, such as discipline and respect, that you cannot get in the civilian world. Further, those traits serve as the perfect springboard into your next career.

WOW so many posters pushing the propaganda (Poster 2, 67, and 71, copy-paste much). Damage-control bots -- so disappointing.

I was a member for 20 years, retired and miss it! I got a descent pension, went through tough times with cutbacks in the 90s but left on a medical release. For all the young people that are thinking of signing up, it's a great career! I now work for one of the worst companies (Shaw) in the country and believe me I wouldn't give them the rating that I give the CF

The training and retirement benefits are much better than found in private industry. Plus there is job stability and fair treatment, which is not the case any more with any company (look at RIM and Nortel for example).

Like the slogan says, there's no life like it. Where else can you get a decent pension and excellent training these days, with employers showing no loyalty whatsoever, slashing benefits, laying people off. This is an option which too many bright university graduates have overlooked.

They paid for me to get a BEng. Salary is very competitive compared to anywhere else in Canada (50,000 after degree - 80, 000 a few years later). 4 weeks paid vacation for 1st 5 years, 5 weeks after that. Get to deal with some very interesting equipment such as warships and all their engineering systems.

Assigned to Cold Lake AFB. Overall it's a great place to work! Everyone is very approachable, it is a very people oriented organization, plenty to do in terms of R&R;, feels great to spend tax payers money!

I had three choices to join/be: Cirque du Soleil , Biker Gang (Rock Machine), Squeegee Kid, Farmer in Quebec, Canadian Military. I chose the military because all the others rejected me.

My experiences mirror the rater immidiately below. I would like to comment on the erratic leadership of some senior officers (I retired as a Captain after 20 years including four at RMC). In my opinion there is a fine line between leadership and abuse at times and it was crossed numerous times by a number of bosses over the years.

I joined the Forces after lossing my job as a Logger in BC Back in 1999. I joined the Army then moved over the the Air Force. I have two deployments to Afghanistan. This career is not for everyone, but the pride and joy of being who we are and doing what we do out weight the negative. If you are thinking of joining: Good. Just do your homework, figure out what you want to do and then go for it....

My career with the Army was full of ups and downs. I was an Officer and an NCM. Both, in the Reserves and the Regular Force. I was raised myself in a military household. I worked across Canada in most provinces with different units. That's why it makes it very hard to speak generally about the Forces overall. I can however give my own take on my experience.

This is a two sided coin, and it entirely depends on how you take things in. As a job, the CF can't be beat. They will whip you into shape, instill very good and useful life and work skills, have the best benefits and pension package around, and it's recession proof.

Now, you ALSO have to be willing to do a lot of travelling, sacrifice weekends and many parts of your social life,and the pay...

I experienced a situation where the boss wrote his own rules that contravened the formal directives and in one case the local smoking bylaws. When confronted through formal grievance management teamed up and any support I had was transferred out. Beware of the old boys club, it still exists. I find the generation in charge today has a lower set of core values when compared to ten years ago, today...

I was continually humiliated as an officer cadet. Other officers ran around with notepads tattle taling as much as they could. My neck was sprained in a self defense demonstration for which I was forced to participate. I continualy verbally abused by the drill sargeant.
