Before being taken over by Sobey's they were one of the top employers in British Columbia, especially for youth. Something changed, I am not sure what, but the feedback from other staff members and community has become more negative with each year. They are a good corporate citizen when it comes to community involvement and attitude of compassion for community campaign's. As a employee unless you...

Same thing as every other post. Loyal employee who has been there for many years. I took pride in working for Thrifty's. I am ashamed now to work for Sobey's. Corporate big wigs who sit at desks and have no clue about valueing their employees. Crappy benefit plan when /sobey's came in. Crappy product taking over the shelves. Staff cut backs. Expected to do more with less. Lots of great people...

This company from what I heard used to be awesome. I have shopped with my mom for years here and always has been great. About 4 months ago I got ino the meat department as a wrapper. First job and it was fun, but then the summer came, I'm 15 and was working 32-48 hour weeks. I had no weekends which I requested because that's the only time I see my dad. The workload was okay, but after a while the...

I have worked at Thriftys for 12 years and would not recomend it to anyone that would like a stress free /work life balance.

At our store there is no recognition from the store manager as he is always in his office and we never know when he is in the store.

I have worked for the Surrey Distribution Center for over a year and the management is shit. Our manager bullies people and picks favorites while kicking the others in the teeth. It is not uncommon for there to be 30+ hours of combined overtime per day because we are so understaffed because our manager wants his bonus for being under budget. We usually get no notice for overtime and are told to...

Was injured due to this employer's negligent safety practices and they tried to bully me into signing a document exempting them from liability. They also falsified the paperwork they were trying to get me to sign and tried to tell me I wasn't entitled to a copy of it. They managed to "lose" two doctor's notes and used this as an excuse to fire me - calling it "job abandonment" - while I was on...

Brutal place to work. Brooks Landing store manager rules by instilling fear in the staff/walks around like king of the castle..micro manager. He likes to manipulate staff by making 'secret' arrangements with ppl and screwing others over. Sneaky. The dept. managers tow the line because they are afraid of the store manager and head office. Shortage of hours=more work for fewer ppl. Sad to see ppl...

I have worked at Thrifty Foods for about a year now and have seen it go from a well managed and organized store to just complete chaos. I use to love coming into work and being around my other co-workers, supervisors and management.. Now I don't enjoy coming into work because something bad always is happening with my department. Hours have always usually been around the same, but the shortage of...

Well I cant say that all these comments suprise me, their the talk of all the stores it seems. I been with this company for 13 years, use to be a proud Thrifty Foods employee, loved going to work everyday. Now I just hate my job! Its been like this for about 3-4 years, its just bizzarre to see such a well organized and wonderfully managed company turn into a circus, so embarrassing! I watched...

As an expendable employee of Port Place Mall Thrifty's. I fought for my door pass, a correct name tag however as a front end employee my receipts continue to have the misspelling of my name after eight months of employment. It took 5 months for my door pass and appropriate name tag. I had to phone head office to argue about the requested time off as I volunteer. I was told I never said...

Staff at Thrifty Foods used to LOVE their jobs. As an older employee, all I wanted was about 24 hours a week, just a nice little part time job, stress-free where I could serve customers and have fun at the same time. Thrifty Foods was all of that! But this isn't Thrifty Foods anymore. Sobeys has taken what was a wonderful, home-grown,family-owned business and turned it into a nasty,...

Port Moody was a great place to work when it opened in August 2008! The first Store Manager was awesome. The next 3, yes that would be 4 store managers in 3 yrs, seem to come in and want to get the hell out of there as fast as they can! That sure does a number on the staff. Cutting hours and dumping heavier and heavier work loads on current staff is really taking a toll not to mention the current...

This is no longer Thrifty's: it's Sobey's in all but name. You are no longer respected as an employee here. It's now 100% about profit, employees don't matter; they've also clearly cut most of the full-time positions down to part-time so they don't have to give them benefits.

Since Sobey's took over the company has suffered in a short few YEARS. Upper management are mostly Americans or Maritimers and there is no one left from the old days from BC. They don't care about the community and the community is bitting back. Lets face it, it's the BC beach head for Sobey's. Head office/Nova Scotia seems to have no clue on how to run a grocery store. Cutting hours and only hiring part time work for 4 hours a week might save the shareholders money, but it costs on quality, which in turn, creates sales, which logically would make the shareholders more money. Oh wait, I'm just a peon, I don't sit at a desk, and whenever us staff have an idea, it's always nicely shot...

I was hired almost two months ago, however I have only been scheduled for my first shift tomorrow. During the hiring process, for about three weeks they just kept asking me to come in and sign things, though it took them another week, once they had all my bank account information, and more, to actually say, "Okay, NOW you're hired."

After that, about another three weeks went by. They would...

I worked in the deli where a ton of food was wasted. There was no composting because an employee who took everything home to her personal compost quit and the store didn't start one. My initial complaint is the loss of a 'family food store feel' in the wake of Sobey's buying Thrifty's. As this allows the advancement of the Thrifty's chain into the mainland, there is now a definite corporate flavor to the whole outfit.

What really burns me up are the cut hours, the lack of staffing, and seeing some of my colleagues scraping by and worrying about making rent and EATING...

I worked for Thrifty Foods for 10 years and personally watched the company go from the home grown, wonderful place to work to a cold, heartless, poorly managed corporate chain. It really is a shame. I've worked at Thrifty Foods for a while now and it was always said to be a good place to work. No longer. I currently work at a Thrifty's Store. Recently we were told that our hours had been cut and more staff hired to cut costs due to 'construction'. But, I have found out this has been going on at other stores and despite the added staff we are more short staffed than ever. I am doing something about it, I am taking a stand. (...) It is never to late to make a better workplace for ourselves.
