I have worked as a part-time cashier at Safeway for about a year now. I work in another department and I am on my feet all day. I have been told by many staff members that all these people do in hide at the back storage area and talk and goof off.

I hated working at Safeway, but I am not bitter. The incompetent employees that I worked with are still there. They will spend their entire careers there. Management has high expectations for good service despite the lack of staff and pressures the workers to do more than is needed. (eg. help a customer on your break/lunch!) The wages are poor and benefits are only provided if you meet a certain number of hours a week (22). One should expect to be frequently called in to replace those who have called in sick or because they underscheduled staff....

The Union has no backbone when issues come up between the employer and an employee. They have no education when it comes to a strike vote. The company has done there best over the years to replace the top wage employees with benefits, along with the help of the union. If you want a job that pays little, disrespects you as a human being, and you pay union dues that get you nothing, think again....

I work in logistics and distribution. This is what one can expect from Safeway

The good:

- A consistent schedule.

- Above average wage.

- A unionized environment.

- Opportunity for overtime.

- No pressure to work unwanted overtime.

- No need to go "above-and-beyond," just do your job as described.

The bad:

- There's a poorly engineered productivity system. The CALM system is a...

Employer has been actively recruiting with promises of providing a great work environment. But my experience has been, that even though they agreed to be flexible since the position is part time and I am a student, they pressure you to work many shifts. Also, require you to wear certain clothing for work and it comes out of your pay.

The only I stayed at Safeway is because I have a union...if we didnt I would have left a long time ago. I like enjoy the benefits and my vacation entitlement. Safeway should appreciate the employees that have stayed and who continue to carry the weight of the lack of employees -- which they cant hire because of the inadiquate wages

They lied to us in 1993, they tried to take again in 1997 and we fought back and now in this economy they have pushed us to another strike vote again ---- they have obviously forgotten how the 97 stier affected thir business -- WELL I GUESS WE MAY HAVE TO REMIND THEM !!!!Because I am not settling for a 50cent raise a year when the economy in this province has shot through the roof!! shame on them

Found an atmosphere of mild hostility amongst the ranks. Communications were not relayed effectively to employees, nor was feedback (some management even keeping records of issues for weeks before telling an employee). Requires you put the company's business requirements before your own personal life.
