SCC / Service Correctionnel du Canada

Size of company: Large (More than 500 employees)

Industry: Government and Public Administration

  • Oh where do I begin? For starters, the schedule is awful (16hr shifts with a 9 hour shift right before and right after-- you're lucky to get 12 hours of sleep in 3 days). Management is callous and ineffective (even the few good supervisors are stymied by oppressive regulations). Workplace culture is extremely toxic (God help you if you say the wrong thing or annoy the wrong person-- you will be made a pariah). You're constantly hamstrung by regulations that prevent you from taking any real action against uncooperative or abusive "guests". Work posts are dirty, run-down, and uncomfortable (many are injuries waiting to happen). Training and employee selection is frighteningly inadequate. Your only opportunity for advancement is: if you are friends with some upper managers, you bungle your job so badly that they have to put you somewhere else, or by submitting hundreds of applications for internal opportunities in the hopes that you might get one and get out of the hole of a job you're in. Pay and benefits are ok though...
