GRC / Gendarmerie Royale du Canada

Size of company: Large (More than 500 employees)

Industry: Government and Public Administration

  • Underfunded and understaffed, this is an organization managed by people who refuse to acknowledge that the RCMP is grossly underfunded, understaffed, and has misguided priorities. I have worked for the RCMP for 21 years and it only gets worse. There are some positions in other federal agencies who perform some of the exact same duties (CBSA, for example) and, if nothing else, as public servants they are paid more than members of the RCMP.

It is technically mandatory to relocate, but almost never is enforced. Say you're in Winnipeg, MB, in the Winnipeg Drug section. After five years. they might ask you to move... to Winnipeg Major Crimes section. Five years later, it's off to Winnipeg Customs/Excise. All in the same building. You're happy (you don't have to move), the RCMP is happy (it cost them no money), everyone is happy! Well, except for the 80% of the mounties who have been trying to get to Winnipeg for the previous 15 years. For them? No, it's not mandatory to move, if they really want to live in Gods Lake Narrows forever.

As per RCMP vs municipal, both have their pros and cons. Despite claims to the contrary, it's a lot easier to get hired by the RCMP than some municipal forces. Their training is invariably better. But be prepared to leave home and never return, don't believe anyone telling you otherwise.
