Bank of Canada

Size of company: Large (More than 500 employees)

Industry: Bank, Insurance, Financial services

  • If you are a research-oriented economist, the Bank is probably still a good place to work. However, unlike the analytic groups, the IT department is being run according to the whims of duplicitous, over-reacting, underachievers who clearly favour manipulation over honest communication and who have replaced a culture of pride and teamwork by one of fear and intimidation. At the same time, a mind-numbing emphasis on bureaucracy has eliminated any opportunity for technical excellence or innovative thinking.

This is definitely an organization being groomed for outsourcing, so do not be fooled by the promise of job-security or great benefits. On the other hand, if work in a call centre or sweatshop appeals to you and the word "yes" has been hardwired into your brain, the IT department of the Bank of Canada may be just the place for you.

No change in 2020.

My thoughts exactly. Intimidation if you do not agree with the higher ups is status quo these days. Your opinion is only valued if you agree with all the rash decisions being made at this time. Horrible work environment.
